The different number plates in Luxembourg are grouped according to the type of vehicle:
- st-1 for standard plates
- st-2 4*4 plates, mc-1
- mc-2 motorbike plates
- cma-1 cma-2 for scooter plates

The plates are also grouped according to the date of registration of the vehicle. For example the historical black plates are plates for old timer vehicles older than 30 years and the yellow plates are old formats from before 2003.
